A speech
therapist visits the school regularly. Students who are referred by their
teacher or parents and qualify for this service can be scheduled to work
with the therapist on a regular basis. If any parent feels their child may
need help in the area of speech development, they should contact their
child's teacher in order to obtain an evaluation from the therapist. Certain
restrictions apply to those students who do not reside in Floyd County.
This student
organization, with classroom representatives elected from Grades 5 - 8,
meets once a month to exchange ideas for the betterment of the school and to
serve as the connecting link between the student body and the faculty.
Student Council officers must maintain a minimum of a "B" average in
academics, while representatives must maintain a minimum of a "C" average to
serve on this body. Student Council members are expected to participate in
all Student Council sponsored events. Exemplary behavior is expected to
serve on the Council.
Parents should
help their child be aware of skills and techniques that make learning easier
and more enjoyable. The following are student guidelines for achieving good
study habits:
·
Come to class prepared with homework, pencils, paper, and other necessary
materials.
·
Be
an active participant in class. Listen well and get involved.
·
Ask
questions to clarify problems.
·
Plan your day wisely and schedule time for homework.
·
Use
what is learned, and apply it to new situations.
·
Strive to do the very best work possible. Just "getting by" is not a
worthwhile goal.

Telecommunications and other technologies make
vast amounts of information more readily accessible. Students benefit from
having access to these rich information resources and from developing
appropriate skills to analyze and evaluate such resources. Electronic
information research skills are fundamental to preparing citizens and
employees for the information age.
Students should
behave responsibly when using these resources. Internet access at SMCS is
provided for students to conduct educational research in a supervised
environment. Use of these network services will be available to students who
agree to act in a responsible and considerate manner.
Independent student use of telecommunications and electronic information
resources will be permitted upon completion of an introductory training
session with the Technology Coordinator and submission of permission forms
and agreement forms by parents and by students themselves (Internet
Acceptable Use Policy- see appendix). Students will not be granted Internet
privileges without the signed and returned Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
Access to telecommunications will enable students to explore thousands of
libraries, databases, and bulletin boards. The administration and staff of
SMCS believe the benefits to students from access in the form of information
resources and opportunities for collaboration exceed the disadvantages. But
ultimately parents and guardians are responsible for setting and conveying
the standards that their children should follow when using media and
information resources. To that end, we respect and support each family’s
right to decide whether or not to give permission for independent access.
Students and
teachers are ordinarily not called to the telephone during instructional
time, except for emergency messages.
Students may use the telephone only with the permission of the teacher or
principal. Any long distance calls made by students will be made collect.
The
answering machine may be utilized to receive messages at various times
throughout the school day.
