Rite of
Reconciliation preparation and First Communion formal preparation are the
responsibility of the parents working with the teacher of the Second Grade
students. The Rite of Reconciliation will take place in the fall and First
Communion will take place in the spring.
Students in Grades 5 through 8 are encouraged to participate in penance
services during Advent and Lent.
Confirmation catechesis begins as a total
parish event in grade nine with encouragement of the reception of the
sacrament taking place during high school.
The
Director of Religious Education (DRE) designee assists the teachers in the
necessary sacramental preparations. The DRE designee will also conduct
sessions for parents of students as they prepare to receive the Sacraments
of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. The Youth Minister accepts the
responsibility of preparing the youth for Confirmation.
SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
PROCEDURES
ARRIVAL
Children should
not arrive at school before
7:45 AM
unless enrolled in the morning Extend-A-Care program. The school doors will
remain locked until this time.
***In the event
of a two-hour delay due to inclement weather, the doors will open at
9:45 AM. Students will not be admitted prior to the designated
time. Any student arriving between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. will be directed
to the gymnasium where all students will be supervised. Students will be
dismissed from the gymnasium at 8:00 a.m. to report to his/her classroom and
to prepare for the school day.
Many parents
expressed safety concerns in regard to students being dropped off in the
parking lot in the morning. While children are walking across the lot to the
school building, cars are pulling into the parking lot, creating a
potentially dangerous situation for the student. In an effort to promote
safety in the morning, we request that you utilize the following procedure
in dropping your children off:
Parents dropping
off their children for school are to pull up to the curb area between the
Guardian Angel door and the Mary door on Eighth St. or the curb area on Elm
St. adjacent to the Mary door. On Eighth St., drivers should pull up as far
as possible toward the Mary door to allow for more vehicles to pull in
behind. Children should leave the cars along the sidewalk via the passenger
side door only and proceed into the school building using either the
Guardian Angel door or the Mary door.
On Elm St.,
drivers should pull up as far as possible toward the cafeteria windows.
Children should leave the cars along the sidewalk via the passenger side
door only and proceed into the school building through the Mary door. This
prevents children from walking through any type of traffic pattern.
STUDENTS ARE NOT TO BE DROPPED OFF PRIOR TO 7:45 AM AND LEFT TO STAND ON
SIDEWALK UNSUPERVISED!
Only
children enrolled in the morning Extend-A-Care program should be dropped off
by the ramp and enter through the cafeteria door.
Parents should
not park their cars along the curb area and exit the vehicle---this
is a drop-off area only. After dropping student(s) off, Drivers
should exit the curb, by following normal traffic patterns.
1.
Please have children ready to exit your car when you arrive. They
should have books, lunches, etc., ready. Long “good-bye” conversations
should be avoided.
2.
Children should exit the vehicle on the passenger side and
directly onto the sidewalk.
3.
Please allow children to exit your car as soon as you have reached
any part of the sidewalk with the yellow curb. You don’t have to drop off
student right by the door.
4.
Please do not
drop students off in the school/parish parking lot.
5.
Some parents prefer to drop off children on the convent side of
Eighth St.. While an adult Crossing Guard is stationed at the corner to
cross walkers, we feel this procedure is not as safe as delivering students
to the sidewalk nearest the building.
******If you wish
to attend Family Friday—Please park your vehicle in the parking lot and
accompany your child in the building---do not park in the Drop-Off area on
the curb.
DISMISSAL
Be sure that your
child, especially a primary student, knows how he or she is to leave school
at the end of the day. For example, if he/she is to go to Extend-A-Care make
certain he/she knows this and is aware who will be picking them up. If
students are to go home with a friend, make certain a note has been sent in
for office approval and your child knows whom to go home with.
Often times the
dismissal line gets held up because students are not aware of their
transportation arrangements or the arrangements have been changed and the
office wasn’t notified. If a child is not “On Deck” and ready for car rider
pick-up, parents/guardians will be asked to circle around the building as to
allow time to locate the child and to not hold up the line. We know your
time is valuable and we want to expedite the Dismissal Procedure as much as
possible to accommodate our families, yet maintain a high level of safety
for our staff and students in the process.
Afternoon
announcements will be made at 2:45-2:50. Dismissal begins immediately after
announcements. We strongly discourage calling for students during
announcements due to the confusion that can be created.
In the event of a
dismissal change after your child has arrived at school, please call the
school office as early as possible to inform the office staff of the change.
Please attempt to call the school office before 2:00 PM. The hour prior to
dismissal can be extremely busy as we attempt to prepare for afternoon
announcements and dismissal routines. If your child has a dismissal change
on a frequent basis, please send the information to school in the form of a
note.
A note must be
written for any changes in a child’s normal dismissal pattern.
The note must
be directed to the office and include the child’s name, the teacher’s name,
the parent’s name, the grade level, the change in transportation, and with
whom the change will occur. The note will be approved by the office and
returned to the classroom teacher.
RELEASE OF
CHILDREN DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
1. Children
will not be released directly from the classroom. They must be signed out in
the school office.
2.
Children are not permitted to meet their parents outside the school
building. They must be picked up at the school office.
3.
If you designate someone to pick up your child, please give him/her
written permission so we will know we have your approval.
4.
Children will not be released to anyone other than a parent or
guardian unless we have confirmation from the parent or guardian.
5.
If your child plans to go home with a friend or stay overnight with
someone, please write the teacher a note. The teacher must have a note to
get approval from the office. Once this is approved by the office this
information is documented for the teacher on our daily attendance sheet.
6.
The parents that are taking another student home with them to spend
the night or for convenience purposes must also send in a note to the office
so that we know that all parents involved have given their permission for
this transportation change.
7.
Students will not be dismissed early from school parties, programs,
special activities, educational tours, etc… without the consent of the
principal and teacher. Students re expected to remain at school for these
activities unless special permission has been given to do otherwise.
Limousines
or other distracting vehicles are not allowed on school property for student
pick-up/arrival purposes from any school activity unless it is a school
sponsored event.
**************CAR
RIDER DISMISSAL**************
STUDENT
SAFETY IS A TOP PRIORITY!! With this in mind we require that all school
families/drivers abide by the following car rider dismissal policy.
(SEE APPENDIX
FOR DISMISSAL TRAFFIC PATTERN OUTLINE)
At registration each family will receive a number. This number needs to be
displayed in the front left corner of your windshield. Your children should
know your family’s number.
All car riders are to be picked up in the parking lot adjacent to the school
building. Students will be dismissed from the various exits throughout the
building and will be lined up in front of the ramp with his/her teacher.
When you arrive at the pick-up point your number will be announced, and a
teacher will assist your child/children in loading the car.
If someone is picking up your children and they do not have your number
card, they should write your family’s number on a large piece of paper and
display it in the front of the car windshield to prevent a delay in the
pick-up line.
For the safety of our children the following rules have been put in place:
v
Teachers will be stationed throughout the parking lot to direct traffic.
Please follow the flow of traffic and direction of the teachers on duty.
v
Drivers should refrain from the use of cellular phones while in the
dismissal line. These phone conversations can be distracting and could lead
to a potentially dangerous setting for our children.
v
Parents should stay in their vehicles.
v
Please do not attempt to go around or pass a car that has stopped.
v
Children are to stay with his/her homeroom teacher until called “on-deck”.
v
Children are to stay with his/her carpool group once called to the “on-deck”
area.
v
Children are to listen to their teacher as they watch for their car to
arrive in the pick-up area.
v
Children are not allowed to play at this time.
v
Children are not to do homework at this time.
v
Children may not cross the lane of traffic unless accompanied by an adult.
v
Children are to walk to his/her car following the direction of the teacher
on duty. Children should walk to the vehicle through the two car lines so
the directing teacher knows when all students have entered the vehicles
safely and can move traffic on out of the lot.
v
No vehicles will be allowed to enter the school parking lot before
2:20 PM.
The parking lot serves as an outdoor classroom setting (weather permitting)
for the P.E. classes. This becomes a potentially dangerous setting for the
students when cars arrive too early for dismissal. The gates will be closed
until this time and violators will be asked to remove their vehicles from
the premises.
v
Parents should not attempt to carpool with more children than his/her
vehicle can safely accommodate with seatbelts.
This is against Indiana State Law!
Any
student(s) not picked up by 3:15 PM will go to Extend-a-Care for further
supervision.
WALKERS
1.
Any student who lives in close proximity to the school building, and
will be walking to and from school, must have a Walker’s Release Form on
file in the school office. No child(ren) will be allowed to walk home until
this form is turned in. We recommend that all students are accompanied by an
adult to ensure his/her safety.
2.
Under no circumstances should students be walking to a designated
location away from the school building to meet a parent/guardian in a
vehicle for car rider pick-up.
3.
For safety reasons, walkers will be dismissed immediately following
the completion of car rider dismissal. This is to allow vehicles time to
vacate the premises and to prevent the walkers from being in the line of
traffic.
4.
Walkers are required to report to car rider dismissal with his/her
classroom teacher. The teacher on duty will monitor students as they exit
the building and begin his/her journey.
