ST.
MARY'S BOARD OF EDUCATION
By authority of
the Archbishop, the Board is the primary policy-making body in all matters
of education in the parish. The purpose of The Board of Education will be to
provide for the educational needs of the Catholic community that it
represents. The Board shall determine and adopt such policies and practices
as it deems necessary. The decisions of The Board will be binding throughout
the parish.
The
Board of Education is composed of the pastor of St. Mary's Parish as
chairman with 8 - 12 discerned lay representatives from the parish. The
Director of Religious Education, the Youth Minister, and the Principal serve
on The Board as ex-officio members. The open meetings of The Board are held
on the first Thursday (that school is in session) of the month and are
announced in the parish bulletin.
The principal
serves as the administrative head of St. Mary's School with the
responsibility to formulate programs and procedures in accord with the
policies determined by the Archdiocesan Board, the Indiana State Board of
Education, and the St. Mary's Board of Education. The principal has the
responsibility of keeping The Board well informed about the condition of the
system and proposing the adoption of needed policies. The principal is also
authorized to carry out The Board's mandate to run the Catholic school's
programs and curriculum.
The teachers are
directly responsible to the principal and the St. Mary's Board of Education
for local policies, procedures, and for the implementations of the goals and
policies of the Archdiocesan Board.
In order to
provide quality education, parents' responsibilities include weekly church
attendance with their child(ren) as well as working on fund-raising projects
sponsored by the school including the summer festival.
Parents of all students are expected to attend the Home-School Association
meetings. These meetings are held four times a year, to confer with faculty
and other parents, while discussing the goals in education of the students,
and to bring about closer cooperation in discharging the mutual
responsibilities in educating the students. The Association’s members donate
time, talent, and money for school projects and activities, which include
the sports and academic programs.
If clarification
or discussion of school matters is desired, teachers and parents should feel
free to use the proper channels to communicate this need.
Parents who have questions or concerns regarding matters of discipline,
class work, or policies are expected to contact their child's homeroom or
departmental teacher. This can be arranged by appointment through the school
office. If the matter in question is not satisfactorily resolved after using
this means of communication, the parents are requested to contact the
principal to arrange a conference with the teacher, parent(s), and
principal. If the problem is not resolved, the parent must contact the Board
of Education in writing.
