All school time
should be devoted to instructional purposes. No one may interrupt classes
nor may teachers or students be called from their classrooms, except for
urgent reasons, and then only with the permission of the principal. Any
important messages will be delivered to a student or teacher through the
office personnel. Parents are welcome to contact teachers by calling the
school office and leaving a message requesting that the teacher contact
them.
Grades
kindergarten through grade 5 have regularly scheduled library time each week
Tuesday - Thursday. Students are read to, and may check out book(s) for a
period of one week. All students are encouraged to make use of library
resources. There are no fines for overdue books. Students are
responsible for returning books in good condition and fines are assessed for
damages. After thirty days, payment is required for lost books and library
privileges are suspended until payment is received. If a lost book is found
and returned after payment has been made, a $1.00 processing fee is retained
and the balance will be refunded.
The library
happily and gratefully accepts donations of your “gently used” books. You
may wish to honor the special student in your life by donating a “new” book
to the library. Gift acknowledgements are noted on the inside cover of
all donated books.
You
are encouraged to volunteer your time in the library. This is a great way to
get involved in your school and make a real difference in the quality of our
library. You may work as often or as little as you like, but volunteers are
needed every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to assist with classes
visiting the library as well as to assist with book management and
operational needs. Used books are sold in the library for .25 cents
(paperbacks) and .50 cents (hardbound covers). A “used” book sale will be
held in the cafeteria periodically during lunch shifts. Monies from these
sales are used to purchase much needed books and library supplies.
Students attend
Mass once a week. Children in grades 1-8 participate in liturgical
celebrations on Thursdays at 8:15 AM (the day is subject to change based on
holy days that fall during the week). Grades K through 8 Masses are
celebrated on special feasts and holy days. Kindergarten students will
attend every other week in small groups. Immediately following the Mass,
students will participate in reciting a portion of the Rosary. Parents and
friends are invited and encouraged to attend any of the students' liturgies.
Children
naturally will misplace things. When a lost article is turned in, we put it
in the Lost and Found Box. If the lost article is not claimed after a
reasonable time, it is either discarded or given to someone who has a need
for it. Generally, lost articles are kept about six weeks before disposal.
Hot lunches are
served daily in the cafeteria. The price of the lunch per student is
determined at the beginning of each school year, and it is announced in the
information which is received on registration day. Students who eat a hot
lunch in the cafeteria should keep all lunch accounts current
according to the recommended payment plan that is provided at registration.
Lunch Money is to be brought in a sealed envelope marked with the
student's name and grade. Families may put all their children's money in
one envelope. Checks are to be made out to ST. MARY'S CAFETERIA.
A nutritious lunch may be purchased weekly for $11.25 ($2.25 a day). If a
child wishes to buy milk only, with a sack lunch, the cost is $.25. Extra
milk is an additional $.25. An extra entrée is $1.00 and an extra portion of
a side item is $.25.
Fast food lunches and soft drinks are prohibited (Subway sandwiches and
fruit juice are permissible and are not considered “Fast Food”). Students
may bring their own lunches, although we request that you do not bring glass
containers. If a parent wishes to have lunch with his/her child and bring
fast food items, they may eat in a designated area outside the cafeteria.
Please send in a note that morning so that we may make arrangements for you
to have lunch in a private location.
If
the child has specific food allergies, a doctor’s statement must be on file
in the office. Food substitutions can be made if required. Juice drinks can
be purchased if needed as a substitute for milk.
Competitive food items that contain less than five percent of the minimal
nutritional value recommended by the U.S. Dietary Allowances are prohibited
during lunchtime in the cafeteria. Examples of these are hard candy, water
ices, chewing gum, soft drinks, candy bars, etc…
In
the event that you would like to have lunch with your child, the following
is the lunch schedule:
LUNCH SCHEDULE
1ST
SEATING- 11:15-11:45 Grades 6, 7, 8, and K
2nd
SEATING- 11:50-12:30 Grades 1-5
The schedule
includes a brief passing period. If you would like a school lunch, please
send a note to school with your child. This will allow Food Service workers
to prepare an adequate amount of food.
The
school offers a Free and Reduced Lunch program. Applications can be obtained
from the principal's office on registration day or at any time during the
school year. All applications are kept confidential.
In
order to increase family involvement, parents/relatives of students are
encouraged to work at least once a month in the cafeteria
during the school year. Cafeteria duties include but are not limited to:
disinfecting tables and chairs, preparing and serving food, distributing
milk, scraping, washing, and drying dishes, monitoring student behavior, and
dismissing and lining students up after lunch. Workers should report by 10:
30 AM on a regular school day.
*Indiana State
Board of Health Guidelines prohibit young children (infants and toddlers)
from being in the kitchen during serving hours due to safety and sanitary
issues.
Younger
siblings/children will not be allowed in the kitchen with parents who are
volunteering in the cafeteria.
LUNCH MONEY ACCOUNTS
All lunch money
accounts will be kept electronically with the Accuscan Meal Tracker Software
Program. Parents are encouraged to make an initial deposit into their
child’s/ children’s account at the beginning of the year. Parents may
request a report of their account at any time to monitor the daily lunches
being ordered, etc. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure that the
account stays current. The Food Service Director will send home a reminder
to inform you that a low balance remains in your account and that additional
money needs to be sent in to the cafeteria. Lunches must be paid for
in advance, not arrears. The cafeteria staff will be
utilizing a bar code scanner and student roster to track daily lunches being
served. Please remember to send lunch money in a sealed envelope clearly
labeled with his/her name, grade level, and the amount of money enclosed.
Please do not include any other monetary payments (field trips, book fair,
etc.) with your lunch account payments as this goes into a separate account.
Teachers do not open cafeteria payments prior to sending them to the
cafeteria. All money for the cafeteria should be made in a separate payment
and marked accordingly. Once a “Low Balance” reminder is sent home with
the student, a payment should be deposited on all negative accounts within
five business days of the “low balance” reminder being sent home. Once lunch
accounts reach $25.00 in arrears and no payments have been made students
will be served a limited menu of a peanut butter sandwich and a milk until
the account is paid in full as well as additional funds to cover further
purchases. This lunch meets the government requirements of serving three of
the five food groups. Absolutely no extras will be served until the account
is in the black.
