HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

The Home and School Association has been highly involved in maintaining quality school activities and materials for our students. All parents are expected to become members and to actively participate. Meetings are scheduled four times during the year, and they are announced several weeks in advance.

The Home and School Association has four Executive Officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

In the past, the Home and School Association sponsored several fund raising projects to support activities, projects, and materials to enhance student achievement. School families chose to pay a fundraising fee rather than participate in fundraisers. This is a mandatory fee for all families enrolled at SMCS.

The fee is $100.00 per child or $175.00 for two or more children. Collection policies will be the same as tuition and other school fees. These fees are due on registration day. They allow the Home and School Association to fund several important activities during the school year. The Executive Officers for the 2007-2008 school year are as follows:

President-                   Carrie Coe

Vice-President-          Pam Hendrickson

Secretary-                   Lisa Wright

Treasurer-                  Carol Fulkerson

HOME STUDY

Homework is a foundational skill that must be developed. The main purpose of homework is to support the mastery of Indiana Academic Standards while developing discipline that is necessary for positive study and thinking skills. Homework needs to be assigned on a consistent basis. Preparation for tests may be in addition to routine homework.

Students in grades 4 – 8 are required to use a planner to record homework assignments. The planner is an important tool for communication between home and school and helps students learn an important life skill. We encourage every child to read at least 20 minutes per night as part of the homework routine. Homework is designed to be a constructive tool in the teaching - learning process. Its purposes are:

·        To help students develop independent work-study habits.

·        To reinforce learning that has taken place at school.

·        To bring the home and school closer together.

·        To aid parents in observing their child's progress.

Parents are encouraged to:

·        Provide their child(ren) with a suitable place and quiet time to complete required work.

·        Show a positive interest in homework and all other schoolwork.

·        Serve as consultants about problems, but not do the work or serve as editor.

·        Provide the student(s) with stimulating activities (i.e., oral reading, flashcard drills, computer practice, etc.)

Incomplete or missing assignments will have an effect on the student's report card grade(s). Students/parents will not be allowed back into the classrooms following dismissal to pick up any forgotten books, assignments, or homework materials that have been forgotten. Homework is the responsibility of the students.

In case of absence(s), missed assignments are to be requested before school hours, and then picked up at the end of the school day. Teachers will not be expected to withhold instruction from the class in order to prepare a child's homework. If you feel that your child is spending an excessive amount of time on homework each night, please contact the classroom teacher.

HONOR AWARDS/ PRINCIPAL’S LISTS

The honor awards will be based on all grades including the "special" areas (algebra, art, music, PE, and technology). Any "unsatisfactory" marks in academics or behaviors disqualify a student from the honor awards.

The honor awards and end-of-the-year academics awards for grades 4-8 utilize the following guidelines:

Principal’s List of Excellence – Student has earned A’s in all academic areas and         conduct.

Principal’s List of Achievement – Student has earned A’s and B’s in all academic areas and conduct.
