History

Saint Mary’s Parish has supported Catholic school education dating back to 1872. Our present school building was built in 1949. Joint efforts of Saint Mary’s and Holy Trinity formed Catholic Central Primary and Middle schools that took place in 1971. In 1978, all classes consolidated into Saint Mary’s Catholic School after its renovation that year.

The Franciscan Sisters were a strong influence at Saint Mary’s while the Providence Sisters staffed Holy Trinity. Saint Mary’s School has a rich history in educating children of the past, and we have a vision to provide opportunities for the future.

The school address is 420 East Eighth St. , New Albany , IN 47150 . Our school web site address is www.smcsonline.com. The school colors are Navy blue, Columbia blue, and white. Blue to symbolize blue ribbons and white to symbolize the peacefulness of the dove. The mascot is the cougar. Our school motto is SMCS - SUCCESSFULLY MOTIVATING CHAMPION STUDENTS. Our school earned National recognition as a No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon School in 2004.

We are located in downtown New Albany . Presently, there is one administrator, 9 classroom teachers, one General Music teacher, one Physical Education teacher, one Instrumental teacher, one Art teacher, one Special Needs Consultant, and one Technology Coordinator. There is one Plant Operator, one Extend-A-Care Director, three food service personnel, two office personnel, instructional assistants, and several volunteers. The newly formed Cougar Academy Preschool  opened in September 2005 and successfully completed its first year. The Cougar Academy   has one licensed teacher in the area of Early Chilhood Education and one teacher’s assistant to serve the educational and spiritual needs of children ages 3 – 5.

We have a playground, gymnasium, cafeteria, music room, art area, technology lab, science lab, educational resource room, and a library/ media center. We feel we provide an excellent educational setting and teaching staff.

St. Mary's Catholic School is a U.S. Department of Education No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School 2004 and is accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education as well as the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement.
