GENERAL EDUCATION INTERVENTION
The General
Education Intervention (GEI) Team is a group of teachers, chaired by the
Principal designee, whose purpose is to support teachers and parents to
ensure the success of all students at Saint Mary’s Catholic School. The team
identifies and recommends strategies and/or school and community resources
as necessary. Both teachers and parents may refer students to the General
Education Intervention Team. The teachers at St. Mary's School have been
trained in methods for adapting classroom materials to meet the diverse
needs of their students. Parents of students whose needs cannot be met in
this way will be advised of this and their child will be referred for
monitoring, assistance, guidance and/or evaluation through the GEI Team. All
referrals and discussions of the team are confidential. A brochure outlining
the General Education process is available upon request.
A
graduation picture is taken on Mary Day, the Friday before Mother's Day. For
girls, dress for the occasion is modest, semi-formal. For the boys, a suit
and tie is appropriate. A religious exercise is held on Graduation Day. At
an evening liturgy, the graduates receive a certificate and any awards which
may be offered: partial scholarships to Providence High School sponsored by
the Men's Club AND Providence. A reception following the liturgy is provided
by the
Home and
School Association and is prepared by the parents of the 7th
grade students.
Frequently children bring
potentially dangerous toys and other items to school. Certain items are
forbidden and will be confiscated. These include all toy guns, knives,
matches, cigarette lighters, klackers, and pointed objects. Certain toys may
be brought to school only after special permission is granted by the
teacher. Many times in the past, toys, cds and radios have been damaged,
lost, or stolen. It is suggested that parents encourage students to leave
these items at home. Naturally, parents may reclaim any confiscated object.
No trading or selling will be allowed during school hours. The school is not
responsible for the loss or damage of these items. No items that could
create a distraction to the learning environment or cause safety concerns
will be allowed.
CLINIC
If a child is
brought to the office for any medical attention, it is noted in a log kept
in the clinic. Children must go home if-
a.
Running a fever of 100* or more. We suggest that a child be fever
free for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
b.
An unexplained rash, redness, or itching – doctor review necessary
including a note stating permission to return to school. This form can be
faxed from the doctor’s office to the school office (945-4770) prior to the
child returning to school.
c.
Any condition meriting doctor review – pink eye, injury, etc…
d.
Vomiting.
e.
Pain in chest or stomach.
f.
Head lice or nits.
HEADLICE
Children who
have nits or headlice must be treated with pediculicide immediately and
returned to school within 48 hours of exclusion or will be considered
truant. Students must have heads checked by the school nurse at the Floyd
County Health Department located at 1917 Bono Rd. to receive approval prior
to returning to school. Families must call 948-4726 ahead of time to
set up an appointment with the nurse on duty. Students must be NIT- FREE
and will not be allowed to return to school until all are removed and
Floyd County Health Department grants approval.
MEDICATION
In order to
protect the health and welfare of children and school staff members alike,
Indiana laws require that school personnel observe certain safeguards in
administering prescription medication to pupils.
A
written request for administration of medication, signed and dated by the
doctor and signed by the parent, must be on file in the building principal’s
office before medication can be administered by the office staff. This
includes anything that is medicated including cough drops and lip balm. This
request must contain the student’s name, the name of the medication, the
dosage, and time to be given. This form must be renewed at the beginning of
each school year if the medication is to be taken daily. This information
must be given for prescription or non-prescription medication.
The doctor’s office may fax (945-4770) the required information to
the school. Any student with a life threatening illness may carry medication
such as an inhaler or epipen provided a doctor’s statement is on file in the
office.
The
medication must be furnished to the school by the parent or guardian on a
daily dosage basis. Any exception to this daily dosage requirement
must be approved by the school principal after consultation with the school
nurse. Such exceptions will be considered only when the medication is to
be administered for longer than (7) days and when an exception is considered
necessary for the student to receive the medication as prescribed. The
exception will be limited to one (1) week’s supply of the medication which
must be brought to school by the student’s parent, guardian, or by another
arrangement approved, in advance, by the school principal.
The prescribed
medication is to be furnished by the pharmacy in a bottle labeled by
the pharmacy with the following information:
a.
Prescription number
b.
Child’s name
c.
Doctor’s name
d.
Name of medication
e.
Dosage
f.
Time to be given
If your child has any specific allergies or problems
such as hearing, sight, etc…be sure you take time to discuss this problem
with the teacher.
As required by the State of Indiana, Scoliosis
testing will be provided for students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
Hearing testing
for students in grades 1, 4, & 7 and vision screening tests for students in
grades 1, 3, & 8 are provided annually by the county health department
nurse. After the testing is performed, a form is sent home to the parents of
those students whose screenings or tests indicate potential problems.
Immunization
requirements are listed under the "Admissions" section of this handbook.
Speech therapy is
provided for students with this specific need through the New Albany-Floyd
County School Corporation (See additional information under "Speech
Therapy").
