History: Navy Pier was originally opened as a shipping and recreational facility in 1916. It has developed into a family entertainment center. Navy Pier is Chicago's number one tourist attraction today. It has 8 million visitors annually. Among the highlights of Navy Pier's history, it has been used as a training base for the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947. The largest attraction at Navy Pier is its giant Ferris wheel that can be seen from all around. In 1995 Navy Pier was transformed into the attraction area it is today with a $150 million redevelopment. During this industrial face-lift, improvements were made on the historic Head house as the main entrance, the construction of exhibition halls and meeting space, parking garages, Navy Pier Park (including the now famous giant Ferris wheel), and Gateway Park. In 2005, Navy Pier celebrated its 10th Anniversary.
